On June 30 local time, Malaysian Badminton Association president Tengku Zainal officially announced that Iskandar, a former Malaysian men's singles player currently coaching for the Badminton Ireland Association, will return to the Malaysian Badminton Association starting October 1 to serve as the national singles coach.
Iskandar will officially assume the role of Malaysia's national badminton singles coach on October 1.
At a press conference, Tengku Zainal confirmed: "We can now announce that Iskandar will join the national coaching team to assist the singles department. He will return from Ireland and officially start on October 1." Iskandar is currently with the Irish national badminton team and has a contract with Badminton Ireland until the Los Angeles Olympics, but Malaysian Badminton Association secretary-general Wong Choong Hann stated that negotiations had been ongoing, and an agreement was finally reached last week.
The coaching role will be assigned by Jonathan. Wong Choong Hann said, "Negotiations have actually been going on for some time, and he indeed has a contract with Ireland. However, after multiple discussions, Iskandar finally agreed to some of the terms we proposed. Since it is confirmed, the president officially announced today that he will return from Ireland to coach in Malaysia."
Regarding whether Iskandar will coach men's or women's singles, Wong Choong Hann pointed out that the association will leave the decision to Malaysia's national singles head coach Jonathan, "This part will be fully decided by Jonathan, who will make the most suitable arrangements according to the team's needs."
Helping Irish players qualify for the Olympics successfully. Iskandar is currently the head singles coach for Ireland's national team. Over the past two years, he successfully led men's singles player Nhat and women's singles player Rachel to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics, earning recognition for his performance. In fact, news about the Malaysian Badminton Association's intention to recruit this former national player back into the national setup surfaced as early as March this year, and now it has finally been settled. Jonathan has also publicly expressed that Iskandar is an important candidate worthy of inclusion in the coaching lineup.
