On June 30 local time, during the first round of the 2025 Wimbledon men's singles, Russia's 9th seed Medvedev faced a first-round exit, suffering his third consecutive Grand Slam loss this season, yet he showed no concern about his performance, openly saying, "Perhaps I'll be worried once I fall to world No. 15."
Russia’s 9th seed Medvedev was knocked out in the first round.
Medvedev lost to world No. 64 French player Benjamin Bonzi with scores of 6–7 (2–7), 6–3, 6–7 (3–7), 2–6, becoming the first seeded male player to be eliminated at this Wimbledon and experiencing the bitterness of a first-round exit again after the French Open.
Regarding his poor performance, Medvedev calmly stated, "For me, it’s a matter of confidence. If it weren’t for my results at Halle, I’d definitely say I’m missing something. These are just a few matches; I’ve had many close losses this year. Once I start winning, my ranking will improve. I’m not too worried right now. Maybe if I were ranked around 15 this year, I’d be more concerned, but at this stage, I’m not."
Medvedev reached the final at last week’s Halle grass-court tournament and believes his performance at Wimbledon was similar. The difference was that Bonzi played very well. "Even when he faced good shots, he found ways to respond. I’ve watched his matches; he usually can’t sustain long rallies, but today he made almost no errors—only a few mistakes on his forehand, maybe three on his backhand. I checked the draw, and he definitely has the potential to reach the round of 16."
