Dodgers third baseman Max Muncy to undergo knee MRI after collision at third base

Dodgers third baseman Max Muncy exited today’s 5-4 win against the White Sox because of left knee pain. Manager Dave Roberts expressed hope the injury is only a sprain, with Muncy set to have an MRI tomorrow. “At this stage, the test results are encouraging,” Roberts said, “we’re hoping for a sprain diagnosis. He might miss a few days, but the MRI tomorrow will provide more clarity.”

The injury occurred in the top of the sixth inning: White Sox center fielder Michael A. Taylor attempted to steal third base, and catcher Will Smith successfully threw to Muncy for the second out of the inning. During the tag play, Muncy and Taylor collided and fell, with Muncy immediately clutching his left knee. After remaining on the ground for several minutes, Muncy was helped off the field by trainers, and Kiké Hernández replaced him at third base. Taylor also left the game due to a left trapezius contusion.

Roberts did not confirm whether Muncy would be placed on the injured list after the game: “We’re waiting on the MRI results.” After a slow start to the season, Muncy had become one of the Dodgers’ most consistent hitters from May through June. As of Thursday, since April 30, his 175 wRC+ ranked fifth among qualified MLB hitters.

Muncy’s injury happened just as Clayton Kershaw struck out the last batter in the bottom of the sixth, becoming the 20th member of the 3000 strikeout club. “Our thoughts are with Muncy right now,” Kershaw said. “He’s a vital part of the team and a great defender... everyone is concerned. His strong performance over the past two months has made him a key contributor to the team.”
