5 years, $125 million! Reid renews with the Timberwolves, aiming for the championship again; former Sixth Man of the Year

On June 28th Beijing time, according to renowned reporter Shams, Timberwolves center Naz Reid plans to sign a new five-year contract worth $125 million to stay with the team, which includes a player option. Reid declined the $15 million player option for next season, and despite multiple teams offering similar salaries and starting roles, he chose to remain in Minnesota.

Last season, Reid averaged a career-high 14.2 points per game, becoming an indispensable complement to Gobert and Randle. He is one of only three NBA players over the past three seasons to score more than 2,000 points off the bench.

Reid’s previous contract was a three-year, $42 million deal. Compared to that, this time his salary has significantly increased. This means his annual salary will jump from about $14 million to $25 million, an increase of $11 million per year.

At 25 years old, Reid was an undrafted player who won the Sixth Man of the Year award in the 2023-24 season. So far in his career, he averages 11.6 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game. Including this season’s salary, Reid has earned about $33 million in his career, and this new five-year, $125 million deal clearly marks his first major contract.

Over the past two seasons, Reid has averaged 5.4 three-point attempts per game with a 39.5% shooting percentage, making him a crucial spacing option alongside center Gobert in Minnesota’s frontcourt. Last season, lineups featuring both Reid and Gobert outscored opponents by 11.8 points per 100 possessions, ranking first among the team’s 25 most frequently used duos.

Besides Reid, the Timberwolves also face decisions on other free agents, including Randle and Alexander-Walker.
