It is well known that Lillard, recognized as one of the top 75 greatest players, was suddenly released by the Bucks, making him the premier free agent in today’s NBA market.
According to reports from TA journalists, multiple competitive teams such as the Lakers, Warriors, and Celtics have promptly reached out to Lillard, aiming to add the nine-time All-Star guard to their roster.
Lillard is currently debating whether to sign with a new team immediately or wait until he has fully recovered from his Achilles tendon rupture before deciding on his next destination.
Even though Lillard was waived, he will still receive $22.52 million annually from the Bucks over the next five years, and this will not prevent him from earning another salary from a new team. This means if Lillard signs with a new team, he could earn two salaries in one season from two different teams, which is quite a lucrative situation.
However, considering Lillard’s age (nearing 35) and his serious injury history, it’s unlikely he will sign a multi-million dollar long-term contract like before. Fortunately, he remains unrestricted and can choose his preferred team freely.
In the summer of 2023, Lillard decisively ended his one-team fairy tale with the Trail Blazers and headed to Milwaukee to team up with Giannis. Although the outcome was not ideal, his goal of winning a championship has never changed, and he will undoubtedly continue pursuing it once he recovers from injury.
It’s understandable that Lillard’s demands for his next team will be quite high. According to current leaks, the Warriors have been the team most frequently linked to him and are considered one of his ideal landing spots. After acquiring Butler, the Warriors returned to championship contention, and if Curry hadn’t missed games 2 to 5 in the second round due to injury, they might have gone far this postseason.
Imagine the scene of Lillard and Curry, two legendary shooters, playing side by side — it would be truly spectacular.
The issue is, if Lillard joins the Warriors, it’s hard to see him securing a locked-in backcourt duo role alongside Curry. Both are older, shorter, and their playing styles overlap to some extent... as a reserve, Lillard has never come off the bench before, but of course, there’s always a first time for everything.
