Reports indicate the Cavaliers are not very interested in LeBron James! A trade might require a third party; there's no reason to give up young talent.

On July 2nd, Beijing time, according to NBC Sports reporter Kurt Helin, the Cavaliers are "not very interested in reuniting with LeBron James."

At 40 years old, James has opted into his contract for the upcoming season, yet some NBA insiders think that if Rob Pelinka fails to improve the roster this offseason, the future Hall of Famer might seek a trade from the Lakers. Previously, James’s agent Rich Paul issued a statement expressing a similar sentiment.

Helin wrote in his article: "LeBron wants to join a championship-contending team, play meaningful games — meaningful playoffs — and be a central figure on a title contender. Additionally, LeBron has always aimed to maximize his value. By staying, he secures this salary. This means that if he requests a trade, the new team must match LeBron’s salary."

“For example, many fans want him back in Cleveland (league sources told NBC Sports that the Cavaliers are not very interested, but let's assume): if a third team gets involved, maybe a trade could be made sending LeBron for Garland and Strus.”But why would the Cavaliers do that? Giving up young players in the short term to acquire a player who is 15 years older (and possibly declining) just to rent LeBron for a year or twois questionable. Of course, trading LeBron to Cleveland is much easier than sending him to most other places.”

James has played for the Cavaliers twice, leading them to their only championship in franchise history in 2016 by defeating the Warriors. As the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, James is the oldest active player in the league. Last season, he appeared in 70 games for the Lakers, averaging 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, 8.2 assists, 1.0 steals, and 0.6 blocks per game.

In the 2025 playoffs first round, the Lakers lost to the Timberwolves in five games. Throughout that series, James averaged 25.4 points, 9.0 rebounds, 5.6 assists, 2.0 steals, and 1.8 blocks per game.

James is considered one of the greatest players in NBA history, having won four regular-season MVP awards, four championships, and four Finals MVP titles. In 2020, he earned his fourth championship and fourth Finals MVP with the Lakers.

The Cavaliers were the top seed in the Eastern Conference last season but lost to the Pacers in five games during the second round of the playoffs.
